Hello my name is Jay Campbell with The Fax Guys for RightFax University.
This installment covers the use of the SMTPDump applet for troubleshooting SMTP gateway issues.
This video was recorded at 1280 by 720 resolution for High Definition and is best viewed in full screen mode.
In RightFax, the RightFax E-mail Gateway for SMTP can be run in Debug mode to display its activities. However, more detailed information may be required for troubleshooting SMTP issues.
Certain error reports and behavior occurring when troubleshooting SMTP gateway issues may necessitate the use of SMTP Dump, consider the following:
A generic error such as "unable to contact SMTP server" appears in Debug mode.
Latency issues occur (for example, an error may not appear when an email is sent from Telnet, but sometimes an SMTP Dump can show latency issues).
Let's take a look.
Enabling an SMTP Dump
1.Stop the RightFax E-mail Gateway for SMTP using Microsoft Windows Services or Enterprise Fax Manager.
2.Navigate to RightFax\Shared Files\.
3.Rename RFSMTP.DLL to RFSMTP.old.
4.Rename RFSMTPt.DLL to RFSMTP.DLL (notice the "t").
5.Start the RightFax E-Mail Gateway for SMTP normally (you do not need to debug the gateway).
6.Reproduce the issue.
7.Within a few minutes, RightFax\Gateway\SMTPDump.txt is created.
NOTE: Once the issue is reproduced, stop the RightFax E-Mail Gateway for SMTP, and rename the files to prevent the SMTPDump.txt file from growing too large. The SMTPDump.txt file can grow large very quickly.
Reading an SMTPDump.txt File
Open SMTPDump.txt in a text editor such as Notepad. This log file shows the exact SMTP commands that the gateway sent and received from the SMTP server.
The commands are relative to the gateway. "RECV" means a command to RightFax is received from the SMTP server, and "SEND" means a command is sent by the gateway to the SMTP server. The commands help to determine where an error originates and possibly where an issue occurs.
Any socket errors also point to an issue with the network or SMTP server (for example, the SMTP server may be overwhelmed). If possible, attempt to use another SMTP server. If the errors no longer appear, the issue is on the SMTP server side.
That's it for the SMTP Dump applet, check back for other videos regarding setting up the SMTP Gateway, standard debugging, and Telnet troubleshooting for the SMTP gateway.
